- James was sentenced to death (later commuted to life before subsequently being granted his ticket of leave) at Southampton Assizes on 7 March 1797 for "stealing wearing apparel from Mary Brown's house at Alverstroke, Hampshire" and travelled to Australia at the Queen's pleasure with 295 others in the vessel "Barwell" which also carried 18 free settlers including ANDREW McDOUGALL(q.v.) and his family.
