Cyril was a labourer when at 22 years of age he enlisted in the first world war to serve his country as a gunner. His embarkment date being the 11th of May 1917., he returned to Australia on the 19th of Febuary 1919. In 1950 while working as a butcher in Grenfell , Cyril was approached by a man named John Meredith who was collecting fragments from a song ( the bright shade of blue ) he liked Cyril s version and it was published in " folks songs of Australia".
